ArcGIS VS QGIS

The difference between ArcGIS and QGIS

    ArcGIS VS QGIS
    ArcGIS and QGIS

  • ArcGIS VS QGIS When we talk about ArcGIS or QGIS programs, we are here among programs that greatly serve the science of geographic information systems, and both programs can create a geographical database for a specific goal very appropriately, and also operations
  • Geographical reference and spatial, descriptive and statistical analyzes are done through them very appropriately, so from here this article began to answer the question of which programs are better and stronger and what are the differences between them.

  • First,

the ways to add all data, whether vector, Raster, since we want to add layers, aerial photos, maps, or the like to a program, so we do the following:

  1. ArcGIS: We open the ArcMap program and there is the Add Data tool. We note that through this tool we can add and view all types of data and choose the appropriate and add it, as any file that you read in the ArcGIS environment we see and can be added.
  2. QGIS: We notice that when adding any data type, there is a detail in terms of data types. For example, to add a street layer, we choose the Add Vector command, or add a DEM file, we click on the Add Raster tool, or add a layer from ArcGIS, we choose Esri Shapefiles.

  • Here you, as a user of GIS, choose the best method of addition.

Secondly,

join and transfer data, or in a similar sense, the data table:

  1. ArcGIS: We open the ArcMap program. The Join command can be used to join data from an Excel table or from any layer to the target layer.
  2. QGIS: We can do Join easily, but here the names of the data to be joined and linked can be changed or the field name can be changed.

Both methods are characterized by their ease and time and little effort.

  • Third,

data management:

  1. ArcGIS: We open the interface of the ArcCatalog program or the program itself, which is originally the program dedicated to managing, defining linking files, viewing descriptions of layers, maps, images, and the like, knowing the save path, allowing writing notes, knowing Metadata for any type of data, and adding databases, data sets and layers, whether Feature Class or Shapefile .
  2. QGIS: There is a control panel that we add, or it is available in the default form, called Browser, in which the device files are located, and there is a breakdown of the types of data.

Easily manage data and files in these programs and in clear, designated places.

  • Fourth,

data sources from the Internet:

  1. ArcGIS: We open the ArcMap program, go to ArcGIS Online, and create an account on it. Through it, the existing main basemaps can be added automatically when installing the program, or there can be people who have uploaded data. We can search for any target and download the required, and we can create Geographical database and layers in order to build data from basemaps from the Internet.
  2. QGIS: One of its most important features is that it is an open source program, meaning that it is free, and data is available from the Internet for free, so you can download any of the free basemaps in an easier and more powerful way than ArcGIS programs. Then we can build data from the basemaps.

Here, in my personal opinion, QGIS is better and more powerful in downloading open-source and free data.

  • Fifth,

the coordinate system:

  1. ArcGIS: When adding a set of data, whether Vector or Raster, and it differs in the coordinate system, the program gives us a message before adding that there is a difference in the coordinate system for the new layer to be added, or when adding Raster, the coordinate system is unknown, or in the sense that without a geographical reference, a message appears.
  2. QGIS: It has the ability to deal with all added data that do not match the same coordinate system, specifically identifying data with different coordinate systems.

Therefore, QGIS is considered to be the easiest in terms of the coordinate system.

  • Sixth,

tools and accessories:

  1. ArcGIS: We open the interface of the ArcToolbox toolbox. We notice many, many tools, which are more than 900 tools that deal with all files from inside and outside the ArcGIS environment and convert between files and manage them and much more such as spatial, descriptive and statistical analyzes of all data, whether Vector or Raster, and you can download Any tool or set of tools after installing the program.
  2. QGIS: What distinguishes Plugins, i.e. the plug-in, which was developed by program developers or specialized people who create a particular plugin, anyone who uses the program can add any Plugin by searching for it.

ArcGIS software is much more powerful with tools and accessories for easy access to any tool to implement any goal.

  • Seventh,

methods of displaying and encoding data.

  1. ArcGIS: From within ArcMap and when adding data, we find many shapes, methods, coding and showing all spreadsheet texts in a simple and easy way, and the format can be imported and used for any type of data.
  2. QGIS: There are many, many shapes, methods, markup, spreadsheet text display, very powerful in color, and the full format can be saved and used in many programs by saving Style.

Here, in my opinion, QGIS is more powerful than ArcGIS in terms of displaying and encoding data.

  • Eighth,

the license:

ArcGIS software requires a paid license and QGIS is free.

This is a set of differences between the programs (ArcGIS, QGIS), and there are other differences or differences, but I am satisfied with these differences, a nd this article will be updated if there is anything new in the difference between the programs (ArcGIS, QGIS).

After discussing a number of differences, here is a table showing that:

the difference

2

3

  • The table shows the best between the differences, and this is about my experience using these programs. Some answers may be correct and others incorrect, but this is an expression of my personal opinion.

  • So we can say that ArcGIS software is the best, especially for building and creating a geodatabase and Toolbox.

  • Abstract: In my opinion, it is best to know and experience all the programs, in addition to determining the use based on the purpose of actually using GIS. Example:

  1. I can create and prepare a geographic database on ArcGIS and display and encode it on QGIS, and after preparing it, I can also output a map from QGIS.
  2. I am creating a geodatabase on ArcGIS and I do many spatial and statistical analyzes also on ArcGIS through ArcToolbox, but I can add Plugins on QGIS and I found it to be of interest to a specific goal so that I use it for analysis instead of using the Toolbox from ArcGIS.

Advice:

  • You or you, as an interested in GIS, learn and innovate in the field of both aspects of the programs.
